Introduction

Digital Bazaar, the creators of Bitmunk, and CD Baby have formed a partnership that allows any CD Baby artist to have their work sold on the Bitmunk network. The difference with Bitmunk and the other online music stores are that Bitmunk allows you to have complete control over your creations including: royalties, pricing and descriptions of your digital content.

We have gathered a list of commonly asked questions from CD Baby artists and answered them below.

Getting your content on Bitmunk

I am a CD Baby artist, how can I get my stuff on Bitmunk?

There are two ways you can get your stuff on Bitmunk:

  1. The first and easiest way is by allowing digital distribution of your content - CD Baby will ship your data files to us and we will integrate them into Bitmunk.
  2. The second, for the more web-savvy among you, is by registering your creations directly with us. To do this, you must first create a Bitmunk account with us, go to your account options page and click the box that says "I am an artist", and then go to your My Works page and follow the directions contained there.

Having CD Baby Manage Everything

Do I need to create a Bitmunk account if I am a CD Baby artist and have opt-ed in?

A Bitmunk account will automatically be created for you when your music is imported from CD Baby. We will then send CD Baby the account and password information, which they will send you. We cannot e-mail you directly because CD Baby does not share any of your information (other than your album data) with us.

Waiting Period

I have allowed digital distribution through the CD Baby website, how long until my stuff is up for sale on Bitmunk?

There is currently a one to two month turn-around time from when you opt-in at the CD Baby website, to us placing your music on Bitmunk for sale. Most of the time lag is because CD Baby batches digital distributions to us in lots of about 1000-10,000 CDs, if you don't want to wait two months for your music to be published on our website, you could always directly register your work with us (which can take as little as a few hours).

One of my friends who is not a CD Baby artist just registered as a creator on Bitmunk and they can change much more stuff regarding their digital work permissions than I can as a CD Baby artist, why?

The agreement that we signed with CD Baby only allows you to change the descriptions and prices of your digital work. In the future we hope to open up more options to CD Baby artists, but we're starting with this limited set until we figure out all of the details. For example, many CD Baby artists don't know that they cannot sell cover songs in other countries without paying the proper royalties in those countries - some artists don't even know that cover songs are treated differently than original works by the artist.

In short, we're trying to work our way through some of the legal stuff, when we get that covered, we'll be able to give CD Baby artists more control over the other configurable parts of their distribution options.
