Watermarking, as it pertains to the Bitmunk network, is data that is hidden inside a digital file. This hidden data is a form of steganography, an identifying mark, and is used to ensure that you can prove your ownership of a digital file. It is also an incentive for you to not freely distribute the work on the Internet, but instead re-sell it via Bitmunk.
